Dog Food For Sensitive Stomachs

Unlike humans, dogs have very sensitive systems and there are many reasons why a dog may develop a sensitive stomach. The most common causes of a sensitive stomach in dogs include an allergy to certain foods, diarrhoea, vomiting, constant gas, colitis and irritable bowel syndrome. There are also some foods which humans consume regularly which can be harmful to dogs and in some cases, toxic.

Dogs can also develop a sensitive stomach if you should change their diet too abruptly. When switching to a new type of food, it is recommended that you do so gradually over a 2 week period. Start off by replacing a small amount of the old food with the new food and slowly increasing the amount, until the dog is eating only the new food. Also, try not to change the type of food you’re feeding your dog too often as this can cause the gastrointestinal tract to be upset and inflamed.

The first step when a dog shows signs of a sensitive stomach is to take it to the vet to make sure that the dog is not suffering from a more severe problem. The vet will probably need to do a blood test in order to rule out digestive problems such as pancreatitus and colitis.

The vet may recommend that you place the dog on a diet of special sensitive stomach dog food. If you chose to follow that advice, make sure that you choose a quality dog food brand. This route is very expensive and may not work as many dog foods out on the market are made using inferior ingredients and do not contain all the nutrients listed on the packaging.

Rather than going the commercial sensitive dog food route, you could opt to prepare your dog’s meals yourself. This is a more time consuming process, but it is infinitely better for your dog as you can ensure that it receives all the nutrients it needs, in the correct amounts according to the breed of your dog. It will also help you identify what foods may be causing your pet to have a sensitive stomach and enable you to remove that food from the menu.
